hi, i'm omar.

i work on / write about how capital & tech moves development and growth. these days i am thinking on the difference between aspiration and reality, and the reasons for the gap.

i started in consulting, working alternately on private capital and development programs. after that, i worked in the risk industry with a focus on future of trade, and on institutional platforms/ value at risk.

in 2022 i left to build something of my own: a fintech focused on financial planning and mass wealth management. i learned what it takes to go from an idea to a working product (it's hard), and what breaks when you're the one accountable for all of it.

i'm now moving into a role focused on cross-sector development at a sovereign wealth fund. the question i am trying to solve is how eco-systems get built with a positive feedback loop, which creates sustainabilty and generates returns. my hypothesis is that this is why capital deployed for development so often fails to shift outcomes. still - it would take a lot to move the needle. the balance between EBITDA and GDP can be tricky in a globalized world; this is part of the challenge and the core question i am trying to resolve.

as i am often between geneva, london, and riyadh, i often try to bring a global perspective to my analysis.

outside of work: ski touring, scuba diving, sailing, and an unreasonable amount of care put into coffee.
